Two new opportunities for you and your students!
Portland Metro Scholastic registration deadline Wednesday, January 16th, 2013
New Scholastic Art Awards Category - The "Future New" Creative Challenge sponsored by 3D systems - To recognize and encourage the expanding vocabulary of 'making' in the visual and literary arts, the Scholastic Art Awards are introducing the Future New creative challenge in recognition of the National 90th Anniversary celebration.  This challenge asks students to produce boundary-breaking creations that are conceptually or socially-driven and incorporate new materials and technologies like 3D printing and 3D design software as tools for innovation.  Submissions should be experimental in nature and can include collaboration (up to 4 people), interaction participatory performance, project-based community practice, new media strategies, public art proposals, social media campaigns, application software (APPS), among others.

While mixing art and writing is encouraged, any submission which involve writing should deconstruct traditional forms of prose or poetry, employing interactive tools, social media, or radically new forms and perspectives to push the boundaries of the writer's medium.  This can include but is not limited to:  electronic literature such as interactive fiction, hyper text, or computer-generated writing, works using mathematics and science as media for expressing emotion, pieces which adopt the language of radical points of view (such as that of a computer program). stories in the form of text messages, emails, Twitter posts or Facebook statuses, or other forms of experimental writing such as written mockumentaries and fictional science reports.

Works submitted must not fit into other categories of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  Students can submit jpegs, videos, text files and web addresses that fully represent all components of the project.  Students are required to submit a description of the project in addition to all content and media that represent the components.
FUTURE NEW has it's own deadline of JANUARY 4, 2013.

Teacher Registration All teachers will need to register on the Scholastic Art Awards website, www.artandwriting.org, even if you have registered in previous years.  When you register as a teacher you have access to a bounty of information. You will have access to the following, student information, emails, works registered and forms.  You can run reports and print out Excel spreadsheets.  It's a great way to keep track of what's going on!

Important information - Categories

Every year students submit work in the wrong category.  Judges cannot jury work if it's in the wrong category.  Teachers please help your students identify the correct category for their work.  Here are the categories that get most confused, as they are defined by the National Scholastic office:

1. Ceramics - Vessels
made from ceramics or glass. So, if it's made in clay or glass and it is not a vessel, it should be submitted as a Sculpture.
Examples (including but not limited to)
Vases, teapots, bowls, plates, cups, tiles, tableware or other vessels. Ceramic pieces may include earthenware, stoneware, or porcelain, etc. Glass pieces may include stained glass, cast glass, fused glass, blown glass, etc.
2. Mixed Media - This one is probably the worst! - Art made from more than one medium, usually with a three-dimensional element. If it's a painting with a little bit of charcoal, it's a painting.  If it's a drawing with some watercolor, it's a drawing.

Examples (including but not limited to)
Collage, assemblage, cut paper, handmade paper, batik, fiber-based art, fine art books, etc.

3. Digital Art - Computer-generated artwork or works captured by a digital camera andheavily collaged or manipulated to produce digital multimedia work. The production of digital art relies entirely upon computer software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, CorelDraw, or other graphics editing programs.  This is not digital photography, unless it's heavily manipulated.

Examples (including but not limited to)
Digital collages, photo manipulation, digital painting, and fractal art.

NEW THIS YEAR!!!
Art Portfolio -(For Graduating Seniors Only)-  Please note that starting this year portfolios consisting of photography submissions should be submitted as “Art Portfolios.” There will be no separate Photography Portfolio category this year.
Category Description
Art portfolios must include 8 different artworks from any combination of the individual Art categories listed on this page (except for Video Games). A portfolio may also consist entirely of works from the same category. Video Games may not be submitted as part of an Art Portfolio.
Special Instructions
• In addition to the artwork, students must submit a 300 – 750 word Artist Statement answering the following questions:
• Why did you select the work you submitted for your Art Portfolio?
• How do you hope people will react when they view your work?
• What role does art play in your life?
• Artist statements may be entered on the Upload page.
• Students may submit individual pieces in their portfolios to be considered for individual awards. However, for a piece to be considered for an individual award, it must be separately registered in that category.
• Seniors may resubmit artworks submitted in a previous Scholastic Awards competition as part of their Art Portfolio, but should note the previous title and award.
Submissions
Each work within the Art Portfolio is subject to the same upload rules as its equivalent in individual categories. For example, a sculpture entry as part of a portfolio is allowed up to four images, while a photography entry is allowed one image. Video Games may not be submitted as part of an Art Portfolio.
Graduating Seniors are allowed to submit two Art Portfolios per student. If a student is submitting two portfolios, each work can only be included in one portfolio. In other words, the same work cannot be submitted in both portfolios – all 8 works in each portfolio must be unique.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is another opportunity secondary art teachers have to showcase student work and students to earn recognition for their outstanding art.

If you've never participated, you'll need to sign up through the official website to register yourself and your school.  Here is the link to the registration page: http://www.artandwriting.org/Registration
After you've registered, you can then allow your students to register their work- also from that registration page.  Students can register themselves, or you can register them.  All students and their work must be linked to your registration info.  So be sure to get yours done before your kiddos say they can't find you in the system!  If you can't figure out the process, see the email contact info at the bottom of this page to speak with someone who knows the system in your region.

This link offers information about your particular region's scholastic awards, including dates for submission and awards info.  But again, first, you should make sure you've registered yourself on the official site.
