Portland 2012 Biennial

Portland2012 celebrates Oregon artists whose work is defining and advancing contemporary art. Curator Prudence F. Roberts, has selected 24 artists/teams who will present their work at five venues citywide. Roberts' choices represent a broad range of contemporary media, from craft traditions to social practice, installation, photography, painting and film/video. Most of the artists will be exhibiting work not previously shown in Portland or creating new works specifically for the Biennial.

Awards Ceremony Teacher Information

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 6:30 pm Portland Metro Scholastic Art Awards Ceremony, Portland Center for the Performing Arts Newmark Theater, Individual Gold Key, and Senior Portfolio Gold, Silver and Honorable Mention recipients only.

1. If you would like to attend the awards ceremony you needed to reply with your name and address to an email you received from Scholastic.

2. Upon request each teacher will receive ONE ticket. You will need that ticket to attend the ceremony.

3. Unfortunately we will not have enough seating to accommodate inviting administrators to the ceremony. Please feel free to invite administrators and others to the show of Gold Key work at the Pacific Northwest College of Art and the Gold Key Portfolio work at the Oregon College of Art and Craft.

The live show of Gold Key individual pieces will be up at PNCA from February 6th - February 25th. You and your family and friends can come as often as you like to visit the show during the time that PNCA is open to the public.

Guess what's right around the corner? You guessed it! YAM that's Youth Art Month and it is the month of March! So, what do you have planned? What have you done in year's past? Let us make some suggestions! And check out the "PAGE" on the sidebar or this blog to see links to national YAM info.

Present at a school board meeting! Talk to your principals asap so you can get yourself on the March agenda now! Make it an annual event- thank your board for all they've done to support the arts at your school or district while explaining to them the IMPORTANCE of art education! Bring a powerpoint presentation, students and their artwork or simply speak about your goals, achievements as a department and future plans. But most of all remember to THANK YOUR SCHOOL BOARD for their support and the OPPORTUNITY to present!

Showcase your student's work in the community! Talk to the local coffee shop and see if they are willing to showcase your kiddo's work for the month- or even a week! Do you have a YMCA? I bet they would allow you to put up a display! Put a display in your local public library! What's going on in the local "assisted living" homes in your area? Nothing puts a smile on a little old lady's face like some student artwork!

Celebrate with your students! Let your freak flag fly! I mean, have your students create YAM flags! Or do some other "novel" type art project in honor and celebration of Youth Art Month!

Host an annual Youth Art Month show! What a great opportunity to showcase student work of all ages!

Get planning now as February will come and go all to quick!

Registration Deadline: the last Wednesday of February

IMPORTANT: Only applicants who have applied and been accepted to WOU are eligible for these scholarships.
Students who have applied but not yet heard back from admissions are still encouraged to attend Portfolio Day and may be awarded a scholarship once they have been accepted.

When: The first Saturday of March, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (We will call you to arrange individual
appointments once we receive your registration form. If you want to request a particular time slot, register early!)
Please arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled meeting time.
Where: Campbell Hall Room 104 Park in parking lot F and walk east between the tennis courts and Maple Hall (barn shaped building with open timber design) and enter Campbell Hall through the back door. Campus Safety will be notified not to ticket guest cars that day. While you are here, we encourage you to tour the art building and visit the exhibition at the Cannon Gallery of Art.
Who is eligible: High school seniors and college transfer students who will be attending WOU next fall as art
majors are eligible to apply. Students currently taking classes at WOU are not eligible for this particular scholarship.
Award Amounts:
Four $1,000 renewable scholarships will be available for art majors entering Western in the fall. Incoming freshmen receiving scholarships may renew their scholarship, if they meet all criteria, for up to three additional years.
Transferring students may renew the scholarship once, for a second year of financial assistance.

How to Apply:
1. Send in the attached registration form now to let us know if you will be coming in person or, for those who live too far away to attend in person, you will be sending an absentee packet, instead. We prefer the first option!
2. Select seven to ten pieces of artwork that reflect the breadth of your creative work. We prefer works created from direct observation or imagination rather than those copied from photos. Be prepared to talk about the assignments and decisions you made while creating the work.
3. Those attending Portfolio Day in person should have flat works (drawings, paintings, original prints or graphic designs) matted or protected with tracing paper or newsprint coversheets hinged with artists tape from one edge of the work. Ceramics and sculptures are also welcome and require no special preparation. Large, unwieldy pieces or pieces that can not be transported (wall murals) may be represented with high quality digital printouts or photos, but please bring at least five actual works in addition to photos.
*Applicants who live too far away to apply in person should refer to the bottom of the next sheet for details on absentee applications. Mailed absentee applications must be postmarked by the last Friday of February
to be considered for this round of scholarships.

My students are registered, the artwork is uploaded, NOW what?

See below for important final steps to the success of your students.

We are done, now what?:

The first thing to do is sign in with your teacher email and password to www.artandwriting.org/registration
Once you are signed in, go to the left hand side of your screen you will see a heading labeled, MANAGE. Under manage, click on WORKS.
Scroll down and you will see a list of all your students. If the have a green box that says UPLOADED, all is well. If they have a red box that says UPLOAD NOW, for some reason the work did NOT get uploaded. Check with that student and help them get the work uploaded correctly.
After you have confirmed that all students have uploaded their work, you are ready to make a report.
On the left hand side of your screen you will see a heading labeled, TOOLS. Under tools, click REPORTS.
Reports will bring you to a page that will outline each student and their work. You want to click the big yellow rectangle that says Export Results to Excel.
You will have an Excel spreadsheet of all the students and the work from your school. Unfortunately, all the work will show up on the spreadsheet, from every teacher and all disciplines. For example if a student entered writing it would show up on your spreadsheet. This does not happen often but it can.
Sorting the Excel spreadsheet is the best way to determine the total number of works from your students.
Make sure to sort by WORK TYPE as well. This will bunch the portfolios together. Portfolios will show up as 8 individual pieces.
NOTE: One of the columns in the Excel spreadsheets indicates that work was not received. This is an administrative column and does not mean the students work was not registered. They should all say not received, unless the work was not uploaded and then it will say not uploaded, at which time you should upload the work.

Once you have done this you should have a clear picture of how many portfolios and individual works your students have registered. Take this number and put it down on the fee form. Individual entries are $5.00 and portfolios are $20.00. The fee form will help you calculate how much money in fees your students owe.

The Fee Form and one check for the total fees are all you have to send in this year.

We will download spreadsheets to cross reference fees owed once we receive your fee form and check, postmarked January 17th, 2012. (if you want to send in the spreadsheet you printed that would be great (save a tree!)

You do not need to send a copy of the students registration. Wahoo! Please continue to have the student print out one form, get a parent to sign it and return it to you. We would recommend putting the form on the back of the artwork.

Art Institute Scholarships!

Applications for The Art Institute of Portland’s High School Senior Scholarship Competition are now open. The Art Institute of Portland is offering $50,000 in tuition scholarships to eligible, high-achieving 2012 high school graduates who demonstrate ability and commitment in one of The Art Institute of Portland’s programs of study. Entrants will compete for 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd place tuition scholarship prizes in the amount of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000, respectively.

National Portfolio Day! Jan 8 @PNCA

Representatives from Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) and more than 30 leading art colleges from across the country converge Sunday, January 8, 2012 at PNCA for National Portfolio Day (NPD). At this free event, college representatives both answer admissions questions and review portfolios of prospective undergraduate students.

Guided campus tours begin at 10 a.m. followed by portfolio reviews at 12 p.m. The event runs until 4 p.m. All National Portfolio Day events are free, open to the public, and do not require per-registration.
National Portfolio Day is designed to help further the artistic development of young artists by bringing together experienced college representatives to review artwork and offer feedback.

Have you been thinking about getting your Masters in Art Education? Not too many schools offer this unique degree. Here is a list I've found of accredited online colleges that offer a MA in Art Ed.

MA in Art Education	Boston University – The Boston University online Master of Arts degree program in Art Education features a curriculum designed to guide and develop a passion for art education ideal for the working student. The program provides methods that demonstrate strategies and techniques for moving art out the textbook and into the classroom.
MA in Art Education	University of Nebraska at Kearney – At the University of Nebraska at Kearney, students in the MA in Education: Art Education program complete an online 36 credit hour course of study. Designed primarily for teachers, the program is also utilized by museum educators. A final project is required, and note that the degree does not grant certification to teach art in K-12 schools.
MA in Art Education	University of Florida – The University of Florida MA in Art Education is a two-year 36 credit hour program that prepares students to become advanced practitioners in art education and who hold an undergraduate degree in art education, art studio, or art history. Specializations include art advocacy, art criticism, art history, studio art, assessment and evaluation, child growth and development, and community arts.

Americans for the Arts is partnering with Kris Wines on its second annual “Art of Education” program, which will award 16 schools in the United States a total of $25,000 to improve academic achievement through arts education. From now until November 30, you can participate to help support arts education programs in America’s K-12 public schools. Please Visit the Kris Facebook app at http://apps.facebook.com/krisartofeducation/ to vote for your favorite K-12 public school to win funding for arts education programs. Participants 21 years and older can vote up to one time per day for multiple schools throughout the duration of the program. Ovation Arts Education Toolkit Resource

Ovation’s Arts Ed Toolkit announces its newest educational materials, including streaming program clips and downloadable, standards-based lessons. These free materials are suitable for grades 9-12 and include video clips of documentaries, films and complementary curriculum units. Users must create an account, but it is free. Upcoming lessons explore paintings by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt; Chopin’s life, work, and musical influences; and works by Jackson Pollock, Norman Rockwell, Shelby Lee Adams, Michael Heizer; and the connections between painting, poetry, and architecture. George Fox: High School Art Northwest Juried Exhibition

History

High School Art Northwest is an annual juried exhibit for high school students in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The purpose of High School Art Northwest is to provide high school students with an exhibition site and to honor their artistic achievements. Since its founding in 1992 thousands of high school students have submitted artworks which are juried by professional artists, gallery directors and other arts professionals.
Each year approximately forty to forty-five artworks are selected for exhibit in the Lindgren Gallery, in the Ross Center at George Fox University. Cash prizes are awarded to juror-selected students based on the excellence of their art. Over the years the exhibit has expanded its scope to include digital art and three-dimensional art.

Entrance Requirements

All entrants agree to allow George Fox University to reproduce images of their artworks on the George Fox University website and for call-for-entry and exhibit show card publications connected with High School Art Northwest. The artist's name and title of his/her artwork will be acknowledged whenever an image is reproduced.
There is no entry fee. Each entrant is limited to two works. All artwork will be judged on the basis of jpg images (smaller than 1M) on CD (no emails), each of which must include the following information in the file name: Artist's first initial, last name and entry number. For example, Trina Smith's two entries would be "tsmith1" and "tsmith2". CD's submitted will not be returned. Complete the entry form and mail it along with the CD to the following address:

Eligibility and Media

The competition is open to all high school students enrolled in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Each piece must be original work executed completely by the entrant.
Eligible two-dimensional media are: paintings, drawings, prints, pastels, digital media (no photographs), two-dimensional and three-dimensional mixed media, ceramics and sculpture. Works on paper must be matted and covered with shrink-wrap, plexiglass, or acetate (no glass); all other works must be framed. We cannot accept work that weighs more than 25 lbs.

An awards ceremony for each of the four regions honors State Awardees every year at the National Conference. Fundred Dollar Bill Project

FUNDRED Armored Truck Pick Up at St. Mary’s Academy on Friday, February 12.
Created by conceptual artist, Mel Chin, the Fundred Dollar Bill Project is a nation-wide effort to help make safe the lead-contaminated soil in New Orleans. Begun in response to Hurricane Katrina, he discovered the deeper problem of lead-contaminated soil. Artwork created by students and adults on 100 dollar bill templates will be delivered to congress for equal funds to address the problem.
St. Mary’s Academy is a collection site for all Oregon schools. We delivered 2,525 FUNDREDS, 600 of which were made by SMA students. A specially designed bio-diesel armored truck, Sous Terre, is traveling the United States picking up the money artwork, and came to St. Mary’s at lunch time on Friday, February 12th.
Art teacher, Kathy Mitchell, coordinates the Portland collection site kathym@stmaryspdx.org and will continue to collect FUNDREDS until the truck reaches Washington, D.C. in mid July. Please have your students make FUNDREDS, and spread the word to all art, social studies, or science teachers to participate in this worthy cause.

Thinking you need a short break from the classroom? How about applying to a residency? One right here in Oregon....
There’s never been a better opportunity to give yourself the time and space to focus on a new body of work, immerse yourself in a particular technique or connect with a dynamic creative community.

The junior residency is a sixteen-week fellowship program open to outstanding emerging artists who wish to immerse themselves in the development of a body of work within a residency context. In fall semester 2010, one appointment will be made in book arts/printmaking and the second in fibers. In spring semester 2011, one appointment will be made in ceramics and the second in drawing/painting.

The senior residency is a six-week summer fellowship program designed to encourage outstanding mid-career artists to take time away from their teaching or studio careers to pursue a focused project in a stimulating art environment. For the 2011 senior residency, three appointments will be made.

The OCAC Artist-in-Residence program is supported by the Collins Foundation. November 10th a lively group of Clackamas County art teachers got together to celebrate the beginning of the new year. Sharing conversations about classrooms, curriculum and life and great time was had by all.

We wrapped up the get together with conversation about upcoming events that Christopher our fearless Clackamas County rep has planned for us, as well as encouragement for the upcoming Scholastic Art Awards.

Chinese American Cultural Bridge Center is a non- profit organization since 1992. Offering two, tour A & B educators tour for 2010. Our special Tour B: 12-day journey from July 15 - July 26, 2010 will take educators (including all educational personal), their family and friends to Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Shanghai for the all-inclusive price of $2,995. Tour A: 15-day journey from June 29 - July 13, 2010 will take educators (including all educational personal), their family and friends to Beijing, Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, Luoyang, Shaolin Temple, Xian and Shanghai for the all-inclusive price of $3,995.

CACBC have recently added a new scholarship program to help teachers who are attending the 2010 Educators Tour (A or B), there are total of three scholarships, $1,500, $1,000, & $500, each offered to a teacher currently teaching in k-12 grade. This Educators Tour is an excellent opportunity open to teachers, educational personnel, family and friends to explore China's art, geography and history. Please join us this Friday for the "Rise Above" opening reception, and show your support for the Rise Above Arts program, and the teens residing at a Safe Place for Youth!

The teens have worked hard to create this compelling art exhibit, using recycled materials, imagination and great heart. Proceeds from the reception will benefit Rise Above, and future art & writing programs for residents of the shelter.

For this group of talented youth, creativity serves as a positive outlet in their often too difficult lives, allowing them to express their struggles, hopes, and dreams.

We hope that you will enjoy this very special exhibit, which is on display through Sept. 31, and take advantage of the opportunity to say hello to some of the artists in person on Friday evening, while enjoying live music and refreshments! For this 4th effort they ask that you "help us build a library of sketchbooks by creating your own and donating it to a collection that will tour galleries across the country."

Portland Art Museum Evening for Educators

The Portland Art Museum invites K-12 educators to enjoy refreshments and wine while networking with colleagues. Evenings for Educators are a chance for museum docents and staff to help teachers understand how to integrate the Museum's special exhibitions and permanent galleries into the classroom. We'll run through the NEW online reservation system, so teachers can learn how to reserve free school tours. The Museum’s director of education and public programs, Christina Olsen, will present the upcoming special exhibition China Design Now. Afterward teachers can go on a special guided tour of the exhibition. A series of short films My China Now will be screened in the Whitsell auditorium, curated by the Northwest Film Center, teachers are invited to attend that as well. A 10% educator discount at the museum gift shop will apply for the night. This event is FREE to educators who are Museum members and $15 for non members. OAEA Secretary is Teaching Teachers

I just finished two separate weeks of teaching non art teachers grades k-12 how to incorperate quality art education into their classroom. It was challenging and fun. They worked their tails off, especially since the last week was during that heat wave we had here in Portland. I taught them about the elements of art, the principals of design and the Oregon state benchmarks for Art. I gave them a good dose of art history as well as lots of tips on materials. They had to do lesson plans too. But they also got to create a lot if cool projects and play with art materials. All in one week's time. The class was through a program called TINT or The Innovative Northwest Teacher, which gives credit through PSU. I'll be teaching a class on Observational Drawing this fall on Wednesday nights. This summer, OCAC is hosting three guest and two faculty artists in residence for a six-week period. The residents will use this period to share ideas and inspiration while working in our studios on their proposed body of work. In addition to the residency, each of the summer residents will present their work to the community in a brief introductory slide presentation. Free Clay from the Portland Children's Museum

Did you know you can get free clay from the Portland Children's Museum? They have a clay room for kids to play with the clay but they never fire it. They just recycle it. They get a great deal from Georgies (Isn't Kristy at Georgie's the greatest) and then when they are done with their clay. They reconstitute it and put it in bags again all ready to use. The only catch is that they only give to non-profits which of course includes public schools. When your budget is strapped and you still want to use clay here is an option for you. You may need to wait since you probably won't be the only one asking so plan on asking ahead of time. Just use the contact below to check it out. Good luck!

The Congressional High School Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery will honor students at an awards reception on May 27th, 5:30 pm at Pacific Northwest College of Art. Students from high schools in the First Congressional District are eligible to submit work for this juried competition. Students from Beaverton, Sunset and Wilson high school had art work selected for Honorable Mention. Art by Isaac Leedom from Sunset High School was selected for first place. His work will be exhibited in Washington DC as part of a national showcase.

Several members of the Oregon Art Education Association recently returned from the National Art Conference held in Minneapolis, MN. A great time was had by all. We helped to celebrate our colleague Christopher Shotola-Hardt as he received his award for Oregon Art Educator of the Year. Shannon made several presentations at Nationals. Susan attended Delegates assembly. Kelly gleaned new and exciting information for our state conferences and Katie got inspired to teach a workshop at Nationals next year. Several other Oregon art educators were in attendance and took home invaluable knowledge and experiences from the trip. If you haven't ever been to a National conference don't miss out next year when the conference heads to Baltimore.

No, this is not a new R rated film. It's the a workshop hosted by the OAEA for the Clackamas County Art Educators. This weekend we were treated with an Encaustic workshop taught by none other than Elise Wagner!!! What a huge treat to learn from Portland's premiere encaustic artist. All participating art educators created at least two images, posted on the link provided. Great art work, wonderful beeswaxy smell and a fantastic gathering of creative minds.
